"Roosevelt Avenue Baseball Notes" Mets Baseball Column By Ron Dresner email: ron@newyorkmets.org
July 14, 2008 --
I’ve always been a cautious New York Mets fan.As the Mets sweep the Colorado Rockies this past weekend and set a consecutive wins record – not just for the Mets franchise – but for the overall league, I can’t forget the fan noise and chanting during this past Sunday night’s ESPN game at Shea Stadium.I really have not heard that before!
The Mets – and the fans – are definitely riding high.I just hope “time” does not deflate the balloon that the team is riding high on right now.The first “time” element I have thought about as one of the reasons why the team is playing better is the upcoming trading deadline.I am sure none of the players want to be traded. In my opinion, Delgado and several other players have started to push themselves to start playing at a higher level of play.I know Delgado’s bat has been hot lately. But let’s see how long he’ll have a hot bat.
All of the players have the trading deadline on their minds.Even one of the “safe” Mets players thought he might be considered before the deadline.David Wright was interviewed recently about his last-minute appointment to the All-Star game. When he got the phone call, David said he thought he was actually being notified about being traded.
Only time will tell.
The other “time” factor that could have an effect in cooling the Mets performance is the All-Star break.I just hope the Mets players do not use the All-Star game break as an excuse to rest a little too, too much and perform a little less.Right now the Mets need to move full-steam ahead and go ahead of the Phillies in the National East Division. After that, they should never look back.
That means also forgetting about Moises Alou and perhaps some of the other players that have been on the disabled list.Ryan Church is one of my favorites, but his return could disrupt the flow and dynamics of the team right now.The last thing the Mets need is to also have Orlando Hernandez want to return as well. Only time will tell.
By the way, does anybody know what happened to Trot Nixon?I thought he came onboard and made a few good plays and produced some hits.Did he leave?Did he go down to AAA New Orleans?A veteran player as Nixon could help the team as the road to the playoffs and World Series gets closer.
By the way, kudos to Joe Morgan and Jon Miller at ESPN with their coverage of the Sunday night game.It was Mets fan dream game with coverage of Shea, Mets history and Mike Pelfrey’s outstanding performance.
More to come later this week about my thoughts about Managers Jerry and the "former" Willie. As you can start feeling, former Manager Willie lacked a few things. Specifically "words" to communicate with his players.
